Lord's Supper
We remember the sacrifice of our Savior, Jesus Christ, through regular observance of the Lord's Supper.
What is the Lord's supper?
Jesus gave the church two visible symbols (called “ordinances”) as reminders of His death - baptism and the Lord's Supper. The Lord's Supper, in some churches called communion, was instituted by Jesus Christ in the upper room on the night before He died.
“For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus in the night when he was betrayed took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it, and said, 'This is My body which is for you; do this in remembrance of Me.' In the same way He took the cup also after supper, saying, 'This cup is the new covenant in My blood; do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.' For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes."
(1 Corinthians 11:23-26)
The bread represents Jesus' broken body while the wine symbolizes the blood that He shed on our behalf. Jesus commanded that believers do this in remembrance of Him until He returns.
Who should participate?
The Lord's Supper is for those who are already believers. This includes children who have accepted Christ and understand the symbolism; parents should determine when this time is appropriate for their children.
Additionally, only those who are serious in their faith should participate in the Lord's Supper. We are to test our motives and attitudes to be certain we are partaking for the right reasons and with the right understanding of what the elements represent.
“Therefore whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner, shall be guilty of the body and the blood of the Lord. But a man must examine himself, and in so doing he is to eat of the bread and drink of the cup. For anyone who eats and drinks, eats and drinks judgment to himself if he does not judge the body rightly.” (1 Corinthians 11:27-29)
When do we celebrate the Lord's Supper?
The Bible doesn't specify when or how often believers should observe the Lord's Supper. At Central, we generally observe the Lord's Supper monthly, at or near the first Sunday of each month.
It is not necessary to be a member of Central in order to observe the Lord's Supper with us — all believers are welcome to join us as we remember the sacrifice made by Jesus Christ on the cross.
