Jesus answered, “It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.” (Matthew 4:4) Jesus was quoting from Deuteronomy 8:13, when Satan tempted him to turn stones into bread. Probably the most common New Year’s resolution for most people is to watch their diet and eat better in order to lose weight and live healthier. We have heard that “you are what you eat.” There is much truth in this statement which we often ignore. We are advised to eat a balanced, nutritional diet to avoid deficiencies. Nutritional deficiencies result in many health problems and certain debilitating diseases. Take just one for instance, a vitamin D deficiency can result in fatigue, bone loss, muscle pain, obesity, cognitive disorders, depression, weakened immunity, and the disease of rickets. Doctors are recommending that people take vitamin D-3 during this COVID pandemic as both prevention and treatment. We must pay attention to what we put in our stomach because it impacts the rest of our body and health. We have minimal daily requirements of all the key nutritional elements and vitamins and must carefully examine our diets to see that these are met.
MATTHEW 4:4
Jesus’ answer “we should live by every word that comes from the mouth of God” should constitute our daily diet. God’s Word has all the carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, minerals, and anti-oxidants for our minimal daily requirements. Our diet in life is determined by what we read, listen to, associate with, watch, and follow. God’s Word is the only source to meet our daily requirements to have a healthy life and keep fit to live and lead as a Christian man. We must pay attention and carefully select what we put into our lives, not just our stomach. Vitamin D may well be the best example since we can get our minimum daily requirement through 15-20 minutes of the sun each day. There is a more important son. God’s Son is our source of all the nutrients needed to live a healthy Christian life. I believe that we need more than 15-20 minutes a day exposed to the Son through God’s Word. God’s Word is not a buffet where you select only what you want, but not all that you need. We cannot just choose only the desserts but must take in all the nutrients. In 2021, make Jesus your dietician. He is the best dietician who knows your daily requirements and will lead you to be nourished by all of God’s Word. Keep God’s Son and His Word in your daily diet for 2021.
