What are you as a Christian leader to do when the foundations are destroyed? As we look at our culture and nation today, we are all alarmed and concerned to see the very foundations being destroyed before our very eyes. It seems that we have lost all “common sense” and foundational values upon which our forefathers sacrificed to give us what we have enjoyed. Family and moral values and respect for life have deteriorated at an alarming rate. Division of our culture, the loss of civility, disrespect for law and order and the breakdown of Biblical homes/families all key to any culture, are being destroyed with no change in sight. It is almost like a snowball rolling down a hill with no speed bumps. If a person stands up to challenge these issues, they are given the label of racist, intolerant or outdated. Billy Graham said, “Our society strives to avoid the possibility of offending anyone, except God.” So, what are righteous leaders to do? I am glad you asked because the Bible provides the answer.
PSALM 11:3
King David faced similar issues when he wrote our Scripture being used this week. He was faced with personal harm and a national crisis that threatened the very stability of Israel. The moral, social, spiritual and civil foundations of his country were being destroyed. His friends were encouraging him to flee to the mountains and run away. King Saul’s ungodly leadership and disobedience to God’s laws and truth caused the upheaval much like we are experiencing today. What did David do and what are we to do? He remained calm and confident and made a resolute declaration to trust God and take refuge in Him. He answered the question in Psalm 11:1 “In the Lord, I take refuge or place my trust; how can you say to my soul, flee as a bird to your mountain.” It is so easy for us to want to flee and withdraw from the ungodly issues in our culture today and not take a stand or lead. David knew and recognized who was in control and where and in whom he was to base his leadership. We find this in Psalm 11:4 “The Lord is in His holy temple; the Lord’s throne is in heaven.” Like David, we must determine in advance that we will completely trust God regardless of the circumstances and lead as men of Christian integrity. Ronald Regan said it well, “Within the covers of the Bible are the answers for all the problems we face.” I urge you to read all seven verses of Psalm 11.
