Leaders Also Follow

Posted by Dean Gage

John 5:19 “So Jesus said to them, 'Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father does, that the Son does likewise.'”

Jesus gives us one the most profound and basic fundamentals of leadership in this Scripture. Everyone in leadership has someone or another authority to follow. Jesus was no exception as He followed his Father and did what He saw his Father do. When I served as President of Texas A&M, I lead a huge organization and thousands of people, but I also had to follow the Chancellor, who followed the Board of Regents, who followed the Governor and Officials of Texas, who followed and answered to the people of the State of Texas, etc. Business, sports, politics, and all other entities give us the same principle of leading and following. How does this apply to you and me today and our leadership?

 “Leaders Also Follow”

John 5:19

We all have leadership responsibilities in our personal lives, our family, and our work. When we accept Jesus as our Savior, we are to lead by following Him and doing what we have seen Him do. Just as Jesus did what He saw his Father do, we are to do what we have seen Him do. Jesus said in Matthew 4:19 “Follow me and I will make you... This is how we are to become the best leader possible. He will make you when you follow him. It also serves as an example of leadership for those whom we lead. Why? It is because followers try and usually do what they see their leaders doing. I promise you that your children and your employees/co-workers do what they see you doing. If they should not be doing something, then you should not either. If they should be doing something, then you should also be doing it. Jesus gave us the best and his own personal example here in John 5:19. Yes, Jesus will make you the best leader possible when you follow Him and do what you have seen Him doing.
