Psalm 119:105“Your word is a lamp for my feet and a light on my path.”
During the recent and memorable Arctic blast, my wife and I often sat for hours in the dark without electricity and a source of light. Small candles, flashlights and the dim light from the fireplace were all we had. If we tried to find the path to the other rooms in the house, it was next to impossible without the flashlight. When there was light, the path could be found and followed. We did have a lot of time to just sit in the dark and talk about how much we missed the source of light to show us the way to go. Blackouts are serious and present dangers.
PSALM 119:105
As Christian leaders, we seek to follow Jesus, who is the light of the world, and God’s Word, which light our path in a dark world. We rightfully ask the Lord to give us direction and to light the path before us. Even more than wanting to see the path, we must be willing to follow the One who lights the path and is the source of light. When we seek Him first, He lights the way and gives us the path to follow. He is always faithful to show us the way and we must be obedient to fix our eyes on where He wants us to go. If not, we are liable to stump our toe and not go where He wants us to go. The dark paths in life can cause us harm. Many years ago, when I was on emergency duty for the TAMU Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital, I was called about an emergency case about 2:00 a.m. In order to not wake up my wife, I slipped out of bed and went to the kitchen to take the call. I closed the door to the hallway behind me to be even quieter. When I completed the call, I started the path back to the bedroom but it was dark and I had forgotten that I had closed the hallway door. I ran into the door, stumped my big toe under the door and tore the toenail. Needless to say, I woke up everyone in the house and didn’t get much sleep the rest of the night. I needed a source of light to show me the path and to protect me from personal injury. In life, we have the source of light which will do this for us. We just have to turn it on because it never has periods of blackout and is always on.
