Genesis 3:9 “But the Lord God called to the man and said to him, 'Where are you?'"
This is a question that we must often ask ourselves almost daily and in whatever setting. God knew where Adam was, and He always knows where we are. Why did God ask Adam this question? He asked it so Adam would have to recognize and admit where he was. God told him long before he created Eve that he was not to eat of the fruit of the tree of knowledge. When he didn’t lead and followed Eve rather than God, he then tried to hide from God. This fall and now the nature of every man repeats itself over and over. God not only asked Adam where he was but also what he had done. God knew this also. Adam made the first excuse of man when he blamed God for giving him Eve when he said it was the woman you gave me. Instead of taking responsibility for what he had done, he accused God. Adam failed the first test of honesty, integrity, obedience, and leadership.
Genesis 3:9
As a leader of our own lives and families, we must be honest with God. God’s Holy Spirit will ask us the same question today, “Where are you?” Just add your name here. We still have the same nature as Adam, so often our answer is the same as Adam’s. We try to hide from God, make excuses, blame others, and attempt to cover our sin ourselves. God took garments of skins from animals who shed their blood to provide them and covered Adam and Eve. Jesus shed his blood on the cross to cover us and all our sins, once and for all. What are we to do when we hear God calling us? We are to immediately recognize where we are, what we have done, and what we are to do. The best answer of obedience to where we are is found in I John 1:9 “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” Is this how you respond to God when he asks, “Where are you?”
