Romans 5:3-5 “We also rejoice in our tribulations, knowing that tribulations bring about perseverance; and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope and hope does not disappoint.”

This is the third in a series on perseverance and how it relates to our character and leadership. In Scripture, perseverance, steadfastness and endurance are all words to describe the same character trait of Jesus and our own character in leadership. Perseverance and trials are always linked together. When I read our verses from Romans, I am reminded of an important quote: “A smooth sea never made a skillful sailor.” Perseverance produces character, maturity, experience, competence and hope. Trials are a part of life and provide us learning and growing experiences to produce maturity and wisdom in our lives. Our attitude towards trials brings us face-to-face with using them as stumbling blocks or as stepping stones.

Trials usually come in three areas of our lives: Health (sickness, injury or death), Wealth (job, career or money) and Family (conflict, infidelity, or divorce). They can also come from friendships and even church. Our greatest life message and ministry may come from our deepest trials and hurts. If God brings it to us, He will bring us through it if we are willing to persevere and trust Him. Leaders are made, not born. Perseverance is a part of being made and develops the character of Christ in us. It also gives us experience to handle greater trials in the future and to minister to others when they face trials. Leadership is truly built on the perseverance and character of Christ. There will never be a greater example of perseverance than the life of Christ all the way to the cross. We don’t like trials but they always have a purpose to grow and mature our character and leadership. C. S. Lewis said this, “God allows us to experience the low points in life in order to teach us lessons that we could learn in no other way.” We cannot lead out of someone else’s experience but we can follow the example of Christ. The Father knows, has His eyes on the clock and His hand on the thermostat. He knows exactly how much we can take and promises to walk with us all the way. “Perseverance in character development and leadership is like riding a bicycle. You don’t fall off unless you stop peddling.” So, keep on peddling and don’t look back.
