Wisdom for the Leader

Posted by Dean Gage

James 1:5 “Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong. Do everything in love.”

Leaders need wisdom to make the right decisions and to lead effectively. When we look at God’s leaders in Scripture, the leaders who made a difference were leaders who depended on the wisdom given by God to them. The very best definition of wisdom to me is simple. “Wisdom is seeing life from God’s point of view.” We gain this wisdom from God’s Word, the Holy Spirit and prayer. Nehemiah is a great example of a wise leader who knew and claimed God’s Word, listened to God’s calling and prayed before and during every decision. James is telling us to realize that we don’t have all the answers, and that we are to ask God for wisdom. He promises to give it when we ask.

 “Wisdom for the Leader”

James 1:5

There is not a single one of us who has all the answers, and we must not be a person so proud that we will not ask for directions. I have heard that this is a fault of men who want to find the way on their own. We are to ask God for direction, protection, strength and courage and keep asking as we walk through life. Our daily walk in life should be a prayer walk of faith knowing that Jesus is always near and ready to give us the wisdom to face everything in our path. Our blessing of wisdom flows out of knowing God, and the more we know Him the more secure our walk will be without stumbling into sin. How many times when growing up did you pause to ask yourself, “What would my father, my dad, do in this decision?” The more we knew our father and what he would do in the situation, the more we would know and have the wisdom to do ourselves. This is the relationship, trust and obedience God wants to give us as we lead our lives and others. Proverbs 3:13 “Blessed is the one who finds wisdom, and the one who gets understanding.” There is no substitute, so ask!
